MUNCIE, IN \u2014 The Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts), in partnership with the City of Muncie, is inviting Delaware County artists to apply for \u201cBox!Box!\u201d, a public art project that transforms traffic signal control boxes into colorful, engaging works of art throughout Muncie.<\/span><\/p>

The deadline to apply for the Fall 2026 season is Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Five
traffic control boxes will be selected for completion during the Fall 2026 season.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cBox!Box!\u201d is part of MuncieArts\u2019 ongoing effort to create attractive, vibrant public spaces that reflect the culture of the community while providing opportunities for local artists to bring their work into the public realm. The project encourages bold, eye-catching and original designs that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors of all ages.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cPublic art is one of the ways we can make Muncie\u2019s neighborhoods more vibrant and welcoming,\u201d said Mayor Dan Ridenour. \u201cBox!Box! gives local artists an opportunity to share their creativity in places where people live, work and travel every day. We\u2019re pleased to partner with MuncieArts on a project that supports our local artists while making our community more beautiful and engaging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u201cTraffic control boxes are something we encounter every day, but we rarely think about them\u00a0<\/span>as opportunities for art,\u201d said Tania Said, Executive Director of the Muncie Arts and\u00a0<\/span>Culture Council. \u201cWe are excited to work with the City of Muncie and area artists to elevate\u00a0<\/span>our city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Fall 2026 Call for Artists<\/b><\/span><\/p>

Participation is open to artists who reside in Delaware County, Indiana, and are at least 18
years of age. Student groups may apply with an eligible adult sponsor.
Proposed artwork must:<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf Be an original design created by the submitting artist or artist collaborative.<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf Be appropriate for viewing by all ages.<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf Be two-dimensional; three-dimensional concepts will not be considered.<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf Not contain offensive or commercial advertising content or defame or invade the rights\u00a0<\/span>of any person.<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf Accommodate a small placard near the bottom of the traffic control box for interpretive\u00a0<\/span>signage.<\/span><\/p>

Designs connected to America\u2019s 250th anniversary will receive special consideration for the\u00a0<\/span>2026 season.\u00a0<\/span>Artists may propose a location that is meaningful to them, including a location near where they\u00a0<\/span>live, work or play. Applicants are asked to identify their top three location preferences on the\u00a0<\/span>application.<\/span><\/p>

Artists are encouraged to visit potential locations before applying to assess site-specific\u00a0<\/span>conditions.<\/span><\/p>

What Artists Need to Submit<\/b><\/span><\/p>

A complete application must include:<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf A $10 application fee<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf A signed and completed application form<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf A rendering of the proposed design using the appropriate traffic control box template<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf A project statement of up to 500 words explaining the artist\u2019s interest in painting a\u00a0<\/span>traffic control box and how the proposed artwork will enhance its surroundings<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf An artist statement or biography describing previous experience<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf At least three work samples related to the proposed \u201cBox!Box!\u201d design<\/span><\/p>

Applications will be evaluated based on originality, composition, artistic merit, artist\u00a0<\/span>experience, and the ability of the artwork to attract attention from a distance. The\u00a0<\/span>selection committee includes MuncieArts board members as well as neighborhood\u00a0<\/span>representatives and area stakeholders, when appropriate.<\/span><\/p>

Artist Compensation<\/b><\/span><\/p>

Selected artists will receive both an artist payment and a supply stipend:<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf $300 participation stipend for small boxes<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf $400 participation stipend for large boxes<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf $75 supply stipend for small boxes<\/span><\/p>

\u25cf $100 supply stipend for large boxes<\/span><\/p>

Supply stipends are provided as gift certificates for approved paint and necessary supplies at\u00a0<\/span>Art Mart located at 409 N Martin St #2, Muncie, IN 47303.<\/span><\/p>

MuncieArts will provide the project\u2019s vinyl way finding ribbon and the final anti-graffiti protective\u00a0<\/span>coating. Artists are responsible for following all required safety procedures while working\u00a0<\/span>on-site.<\/span><\/p>

The Fall 2026 season is scheduled for completion by November 15, 2026.<\/span><\/p>

Building Muncie\u2019s Public Art Collection<\/b><\/span><\/p>

\u201cBox!Box!\u201d is intended to be an ongoing public art initiative, with the ultimate goal of bringing\u00a0<\/span>artist-designed traffic control boxes to neighborhoods throughout the city. Artwork typically\u00a0<\/span>remains on display for three to five years, at MuncieArts\u2019 discretion.<\/span><\/p>

Artists also have the option of proposing a vinyl wrap rather than a painted treatment. Artists\u00a0<\/span>interested in this option should contact MuncieArts Executive Director Tania Said for\u00a0<\/span>information about costing and installation.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cUltimately, we hope to see Box!Box! continue to grow until traffic control boxes throughout\u00a0<\/span>Muncie are adorned with amazing art by local artists,\u201d Said added.<\/span><\/p>

Artists interested in participating in the Fall 2026 season should submit their applications by\u00a0<\/span>Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Applications received after the deadline will not be\u00a0<\/span>considered.<\/span><\/p>

Applications for the 2027 \u201cBox!Box!\u201d season will be accepted on a rolling basis through April\u00a0<\/span>30, 2027.\u00a0<\/span>Crowdfunded donations for Box!Box! will continue to be accepted online at\u00a0<\/span>https:\/\/www.patronicity.com\/MuncieBoxBox through Thursday, September 24, 2026. All\u00a0<\/span>funds received through Patronicity by the deadline will be matched by the Indiana Housing\u00a0<\/span>Community Development Authority through the CreatINg Places program. Box!Box! donations\u00a0<\/span>thereafter will be accepted at munciearts.org\/donate or by mail to P.O. Box 488, Muncie, IN\u00a0<\/span>47305.<\/span><\/p>
