MUNCIE, Ind. — In a WMUN interview, Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour gave listeners a clearer answer about the Southway Plaza project that started in 2022. Ridenour announced that the location of the Southway Plaza will have no further developments. The mayor also alluded to another potential project on Muncie’s Southside.

When interviewed by Steve Lindell and asked if there were any updates to the Southway Plaza the mayor responded:

Ridenour: “Absolutely none. We’re frustrated with the lack of progress that has happened there. And we’ve actually had an opportunity, I’m under a non-disclosure agreement, but it’s something we were gonna put there that’s gonna be on the south side, but is not gonna go in that location. So we’re working with them, trying to encourage them to move forward, but no I don’t have any positive news to express. I wish them all the best and I am hopeful that something good can happen in the future.”

The project was first announced March of 2022, renaming the retail strip The Markets on Madison and after it was bought by BrickRed Systems and now managed by MiddleTown Property Group. The City of Muncie was then expected to work closely on the project, contributing $400k months later for additional improvements. The Star Press reported that after the city’s work on the parking lot (and additional tenants being interested), progress on project halted at the start of 2024.
