MUNCIE, Ind. — After Indiana District 5 Congressmember Victoria Spartz recently threatened to withhold voting for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, citing “unacceptable increases to the national debt and the deficit” in her own words, she joined the majority of her party to pass the piece of legislation 218-214. She did not join two GOP representatives, R-KY Thomas Massie and R-PA Brian Fitzpatrick, to prevent the bill from passing.
The estimated $3 trillion in national debt being added by OBBBA was not changed before the final house vote. The bill along with this increase to the national debt includes $147 billion in defense spending, including a “Golden Dome” missile defense system, nuclear deterrence, and military use of AI.
The bill will include the gutting of public health care and the closure of many hospitals in rural areas. Indiana conservative economist Michael Hicks believes that the bill will cause eight hospitals in the Hoosier state to close. The wide-ranging bill will also add $170 billion to the budget for ICE, happening as the agency continues committing arrests going beyond undocumented immigrants and carrying out crackdowns on free speech.
