In a statement by Chief of Police Nathan Sloan on Thursday, it was confirmed that newly appointed city Police Officer Treyston Johnson had previously been involved in a car accident while driving a police cruiser in Kinston, North Carolina. The accident, which occurred on April 22nd, 2021, at 8:24pm on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, resulted in the death of pedestrian Lyndon Williams.
Back in 2021 WNCT9 reported that the niece of Lyndon Williams wanted “justice and to find out what led to the crash.” The news station additionally reported “a lot of people get around the Kinston area on foot. Some people told 9OYS [9 On Your Side] it’s dangerous and that they want to see drivers be more careful on the roads.”
Nate Sloan wrote in the release: “This was tragic and deeply emotional for all of those involved, but under the circumstances, it could have happened to anyone.” Sloan continued “I would urge our community to be thankful that there are still individuals, locally and across the nation, who are willing to perform the policing duties that others will not.”
Welcome to your new community officer Johnson. Thank you for stepping up to protect the citizens of our community!
Keep safe as you work to keep Munsonians safe!
